Advisor training and development: Why it matters and how to get started

To effectively support student growth, development and educational achievement, advisors need to develop a set of professional skills, knowledge and behaviors. Effective advising programs ensure that advisors are well trained and have access to a wide variety of continuous formal and informal professional development and learning opportunities.

Advisor training programs are often targeted to new advisors. However, the complexities and nuances of advising require ongoing training and reinforcement of diverse skill areas. Advisors must develop the ability to understand concepts, processes, and procedures, as well as engage in problem-solving in their application. In this session, we will examine how to develop a training program by using Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning Domains to ensure that advisors are remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating in order to more effectively serve students and the institution. Participants will examine practical examples of training content geared towards advisors.

Participants will learn how to develop a comprehensive training program designed to facilitate ongoing advisor skill development and facilitate higher order thinking, problem-solving, and analysis. The course is designed to provide exposure to basic theory and trends in advising to ensure you have a solid foundation.
